What is Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)?

Typically sold by private insurance agencies, Medigap is Medicare Supplement Insurance that helps to "fill gaps" in original Medicare insurance. Original Medicare pays for some, but not all, of the cost of health care services and supplies. A Medicare Supplement Insurance policy through Secure Solutions can help pay for most of the remaining health care costs such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

With original Medicare, you pay the deductibles, copays, and 20% for the services you receive from doctors. Medicare Supplement plans help to pay some or all of these costs for you. They "supplement" or "fill the gaps" that original Medicare leaves out. If Medicare doesn't cover the service, then typically your Medicare Supplement plan won't cover the costs either, and you would need to pay for those services yourself.

In general, Medicare plans are individual plans and only cover one person per policy. This is a great advantages since a wife and husband with different needs can have different plans. Medicare Supplement plans allow them to pick the individual plan that is right for them.

What does Medicare Supplement cover?

Your Medicare Supplement plan usually only covers those services that Medicare covers, with the exception of foreign travel. These charges are known as Medicare-allowed or Medicare-covered charges. Most medically-necessary services are covered by Medicare and would then be covered by your supplement plan.

Medicare doesn't cover experimental services, or services that are not medically necessary. Refer to the "Medicare & You" handbook sent out annually, or the Medicare website to read detailed information on covered services.

Medicare Supplement plans stopped covered prescription medications in 2006, although some beneficiaries still own policies that provide this benefit. It is highly recommended that you purchase a Medicare Part D plan to minimize the costs of your medications. Keep in mind, plans like Medicare Part D are separate from your Medicare Supplement plan.

How do you enroll in Medicare Supplement?

In order to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan, you must be first enrolled in Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. If, when you turn 65, you only sign up for Medicare Part A, usually because you or your spouse are still working, you will need to contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) to enroll in Part B.

Once enrolled in both Medicate Parts A and B, you are eligible to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan. One important thing to know is that in the first six months of Medicare Part B enrollment, you can purchase a Medicare Supplement plan without having to worry about having preexisting conditions and not being accepted. This six month period is called the guaranteed issue right prior, and any insurance provider must accept your application.

With Secure Solutions, we make it extremely easy to enroll in the Medicare Supplement plan of your choice. Give us a call at 859-499-3820 to speak with one of our dedicated agents.
